Aarong Shares Impact of BYOB Campaign, Announces New Green Initiatives

Aarong has revealed the environmental impact of its “Bring Your Own Bag” (BYOB) campaign and announced a series of new sustainability initiatives aimed at promoting greener practices across Bangladesh.

At a media briefing held at BRAC Centre in Dhaka, the lifestyle retailer addressed public concerns, clarified misconceptions surrounding the campaign, and shared key outcomes achieved since the initiative began in September 2025.

The campaign, introduced to reduce unnecessary paper bag consumption and encourage sustainable consumer habits, imposed a nominal charge on shopping bags while offering customers a Tk 15 cashback for bringing their own reusable bags.

According to Aarong, between September 2025 and March 2026, the initiative helped save 46,79,721 paper bags compared to the same period a year earlier - an environmental impact equivalent to preserving nearly 6,000 trees.

The campaign also generated Tk 2,89,90,812 through paper bag sales. Aarong said the entire amount will be reinvested into environmental and tree-planting projects across the country.

Building on the campaign’s momentum, Aarong announced three major environmental initiatives:

  • Distribution of 80,000 tree saplings among 40,000 participants of BRAC’s Ultra Poor Graduation Programme nationwide

  • Restoration efforts in the Barind region of Rajshahi, including irrigation support and plantation of 50,000 trees under the Habitat Co-Creation initiative

  • Plantation of 20,000 trees through two Miyawaki forests in Demra and Rupganj in collaboration with Mission Green Bangladesh

Speaking at the event, Tamara Hasan Abed, Managing Director of BRAC Enterprises, thanked customers for supporting the initiative.

“Most of our customers are conscientious citizens, who are well aligned with Aarong’s sustainable philosophy. They appreciated this campaign, encouraged us and we thank them for their belief in the right thing to do, even at a slight inconvenience to them, and for trusting us as an organisation,” she said.

Aarong also acknowledged customer feedback regarding the campaign while stating that harassment, threats toward employees, and filming staff without consent are unacceptable.

The company said it will continue promoting mindful consumption, slow fashion, and sustainable materials and practices throughout its supply chain as part of its long-term commitment to building a greener and more resilient Bangladesh.
