Bangladeshi-born Swedish politician Leo Ahmed has secured the top position on the Left Party’s (Vänsterpartiet) ballot in Sigtuna Municipality ahead of Sweden’s 2026 elections.

Ahmed is number 1 on the Left Party’s ballot in Sigtuna Municipality and number 34 on the party’s ballot for the Swedish parliamentary election. His prominent placement gives him a leading role in the party’s local election campaign while also providing an opportunity to seek a seat in Sweden’s national parliament, the Riksdag.

Early voting in Sweden began on August 26, with Election Day scheduled for September 13, 2026. Swedish voters will elect representatives to the Riksdag as well as regional and municipal councils.

A Milestone for Political Representation

Ahmed’s candidacy represents a significant milestone in his long-standing political engagement and reflects the growing participation of people with immigrant backgrounds in Swedish public and political life.

For Sweden’s Bangladeshi community, his candidacy is particularly notable as an example of political participation and representation at both the municipal and national levels.

Two Decades of Engagement on Migration and Social Issues

Leo Ahmed is a Swedish politician of Bangladeshi origin who has been engaged in Swedish migration policy and social issues for approximately two decades. Throughout his political career, he has focused on raising awareness of challenges faced by migrants and families affected by Sweden’s migration system.

One of the key issues in Ahmed’s recent political engagement has been the situation of teenagers and young people facing deportation from Sweden. He has advocated for young people who have grown up in Sweden or developed strong ties to Swedish society but face the prospect of being forced to leave the country.

For Ahmed, migration policy is not simply a political matter; it directly affects families, children and young people, as well as their opportunities to build secure futures in Sweden.

2026 Election

In the 2026 Swedish elections, Leo Ahmed is contesting as number 1 on the Left Party’s ballot in Sigtuna Municipality and number 34 on the party’s parliamentary ballot.

With voting now underway, his candidacy has drawn attention within Sweden’s Bangladeshi community and among those following issues of migration, social justice and political representation.
