JnU hosts Freshers' Reception, honours outstanding students with Academic Excellence Awards

The Jalalabad Student Welfare Council of Jagannath University (JnU), representing students from the Greater Sylhet region, organised its Freshers' Reception, Academic Excellence Award and Farewell Reception 2026 on Thursday at the university's central auditorium.

The event brought together newly admitted students, graduating students and high-achieving scholars through a reception, award ceremony and cultural performances aimed at promoting academic excellence and strengthening student unity.

Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Roich Uddin attended the programme as the chief guest.

Addressing the audience, the Vice-Chancellor said he shares a special bond with students from Sylhet and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that foster leadership, academic excellence and solidarity among students.

Speaking as a special guest, MM Mahbub Hasan, Head of Financial Inclusion at Prime Bank PLC, encouraged students to develop practical skills and prepare themselves for the global job market. He highlighted Prime Bank's various youth-focused skill development initiatives.

A major attraction of the programme was the presentation of the Jalalabad Gold Award for Academic Excellence to Md Anamul Hasan Kawsar of the Department of Theatre. Kawsar secured first position in both his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with a CGPA of 3.85 and Master of Arts with a perfect 4.00 CGPA at Jagannath University. He also achieved GPA-5 in both the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations in the Science group. The award recognised his consistent academic excellence throughout his educational career.

Dean's Award recipients were also honoured during the ceremony. The awardees included Sambita Talukdar Lata, Swarna Rani Talukdar, Kamon Nahar Lubna, and Payel Das Anik. In addition, Tanay Krishna Deb from the Department of Mathematics and Abu Zakaria from the Department of Drawing and Painting were recognised among the top-performing students of their respective departments.

In his welcome address, Council President Mazharul Islam Tanvir said the organisation had invited leaders of various district-based student welfare associations at Jagannath University to strengthen friendship, cultural exchange and collaboration among students.

Special guests included Dr Ziaul Islam Munna, APS to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia; Professor Dr Sabina Sharmin, Treasurer of Jagannath University; and Professor Dr Imranul Haque, General Secretary of the Jagannath University Teachers' Association.

Faculty advisers present at the programme were Professor Dr Hosne Ara Begum, Associate Professor Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Associate Professor Dr Tapan Kumar Palit, Assistant Professor Rajesh Kumar Dev, and Assistant Professor Swapnila Chowdhury.

The programme was chaired by Council President Mazharul Islam Tanvir and moderated by General Secretary Rezaul Islam Tamim.

According to the organisers, nearly 3,000 students attended the event, which featured 15 varieties of tea, lunch, gift items and a raffle draw offering shopping opportunities at Aarong. They said the programme was organised to inspire academic excellence while strengthening friendship and cooperation among students.
