AI Meets RMG: A New Era for Bangladesh’s Fashion Industry

AI in Focus at Bangladesh’s Largest Textile Expo: Experts Highlight Promise and Pitfalls in RMG Sector

The transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garments (RMG) and fashion industry took center stage at a high-level seminar held during the country’s largest textile exhibition, organized by CEMS Global International.

Titled “Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Bangladesh’s RMG and Fashion Industry: Opportunities and Challenges,” the seminar was co-hosted by the Fashion Design & Technology (FDT) Department of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology (SMUCT).

Moderated by S.M. Sudrul Amin, Assistant Professor at SMUCT, the session brought together industry leaders and academic experts, including Mr. Niaz Morshed, Sourcing Director at Fleet Clothing, UK; Mr. Shohel Anwar Apu, Assistant Professor at SMUCT; and Mr. Fuad Chowdhury, Fashion Designer at Eco Sourcing Limited.

Panelists emphasized that AI is rapidly reshaping the global textile and fashion landscape—from forecasting trends and generating intelligent designs to optimizing supply chains and enhancing quality control. As the world’s second-largest garment exporter, Bangladesh must act swiftly to remain competitive in this evolving ecosystem, they said.

“Artificial Intelligence is no longer optional—it’s essential for the future of our RMG sector. It offers a pathway to higher efficiency, reduced waste, and greater value-added innovation,” said one of the speakers.

However, experts also pointed to significant hurdles, including high costs of implementation, lack of skilled manpower, and the pressing need for stronger collaboration between academia and industry. They called on policymakers and industry stakeholders to invest more in research, training programs, and digital infrastructure.

The seminar drew a diverse audience comprising industry professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, students, and international visitors—reflecting growing global interest in how Bangladesh is preparing for an AI-integrated future.

The consensus: embracing AI is not just a technological advancement but a strategic necessity for ensuring long-term sustainability and growth in Bangladesh’s most critical export sector.
